Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Amer Tabsh

Consultant and Coach

Amer Tabsh, started his career at the age of 16 (1997), after being a loyal customer to one of the top 3 newly launched ISP in Lebanon and fixed their technically problems over the phone each day, they decided to offer him a strange position for his age. Customer Support manager at IntraCom and then technical manager he moved into several ISPs creating many improvements to reach Cyberia where after he jumped into the media world and launched the first Technology educational show in Lebanon and the Arab world in 2001 on Future Television. Since education was the purpose and technology is the aim, Amer decided to share his knowledge with the youth by supporting them and their ideas, helped many universities and school introduce tech and IT into their classes and campuses, supervised and managed the first unique digital archive and digital media department for his Excellency Martyr Rafic Hariri. Holder of many awards and accomplishments, invited to attend the world most important forums and conferences on technology, supervised the release of many tech blogs and tech news sites in the region he moved now into coaching the startups onto the road for success.

Marwan Pharaon

Branch Manager at BLOM Bank sal

Mr. Pharaon has a large banking experience forged by his journey of 15 years at BLOM Bank sal. At the age of 29, Pharaon was appointed Branch Manager thanks to his leadership skills and business development spirit.
He started his career as auditor with prominent audit firms. In 1998, he joined BLOM Bank. His wide understanding of the financial and economic world encouraged him to publish several articles.
Among his qualifications: project managing, multitasking, working under pressure, customer service and marketing
Pharaon is known as humanitarian. The said quality is translated in his volunteer work in many charity organizations. He is currently a member at Lebanese Food Bank org. & Beirut Red Cross.
He Holds a Bachelor in accounting & Finance and an MBA from the Lebanese American University (LAU). He passed successfully the professional exams required by the Central Bank and attained professional certificates in financial regulations and the Securities & Investment Industry.

Ziad Raif Shaaban

IT consultant

Over 15 years of experience in the IT business. His experience includes, and is not limited to, development, system analysis, networking, security auditing, computer support and procurement, capacity building programs. Working as an IT consultant for the American University of Beirut on the projects that have IT components.

Positions occupied during the past 15 years are: Senior programmer, System Analyst, Team Leader, System Administrator, IT Manager, IT Consultant, CEC Director, and IT Advisor.

Most of the consultancy work included restructuring of IT units in terms of organization and HR management, as well as strategic planning. Around 60% of my consultancy work involved network infrastructure and data centre design, RFP preparation, and procurement.

In 2011, was appointed as IT advisor for the Minister of Education and Higher Education in the Lebanese Government

At Beirut Arab University, Director of Center For Entrepreneur with comprehensive experience leading students and corporations through start-up, change, revitalization, turnaround, and accelerated growth. Experienced Economic researcher who can evaluate and analyze the economic issues. Personally credited with driving significant gains in revenues and bottom-line profits through pricing tender leadership for her own business.

Prof. Hamed Nassar, PhD

Electrical and Comptuer Engineering Department - Beirut Arab University

Prof. Nassar has taught numerous computer science and engineering courses and served as external examiner in universities in Egypt, USA, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and Lebanon. He has published over 30 research papers in international journals and conferences, and over 50 scientific articles in local and international trade magazines. He has supervised over 30 MSc and PhD students, and refereed over 40 MSc and PhD theses. He has participated in the design and implementation of several IT mega projects, and evaluated funded research projects for the Ministry of Scientific Research, Egypt, King Saud University, KSA, and Arab Science Technology Foundation, UAE. Prof. Nassar has some administrative experience, as he served in Egypt as college dean (6 yrs), vice dean (5 yrs), chief information officer (2 yrs), head of monitoring committee of the national center for e-learning (2 yrs), and liaison officer for the international amateur radio union for the Arab region (1 yrs). He has been on dozens of committees of all sorts: scientific, curricular, administrative, recruitment and procurement.

Graduated from BAU with a BE in Electrical Engineering. Earned the Master degree from the Grenoble institute of technology in Optical and RadioFrequencies and the PhD Degree from Fourier University.
Currently a faculty member in the engineering department of BAU. His research interests concern millimeter wave devices with the RFM group of the IMEP-LAHC Laboratory in France.

Amin Hashem

Accounting and Finance Instructor

A small business coach who helps Students makes the transition from part time worker to successful entrepreneur. Amin started his coaching business in 2009 to help Students deal with the sometimes overwhelming prospect of starting a new business while still studying.
Prior to coaching, Amin held several training on the accounting software used locally and tax declarations to give students the opportunity reverence to find a greater opportunity to work and therefore reap money.

Mohammad Issa

Hardware Designer and Mentor

Mohammad is an undergrad Computer Engineering student at BAU. He's been very active in the Computer hardware Design field for the past 4 years by giving workshops and seminars in that field. In addition, he mentored science & engineering projects for school and university students by turning their idea into prototypes. One of the recent projects he mentored “Portable Nurse” was awarded in startup weekend BAU , Mubarat el Oloum,intel science fair Lebanon and finalist in ISEF USA .
He will mentor the participants through sharing his experience in the Hardware Startups field.

Dani A. Arnaout

Systems Engineer at Lextech Global Services (USA)

Dani graduated from Beirut Arab University with a Bachelor in Computer Engineering.
He has been very active in the mobile apps development field for the past two years through his tutorial team membership at RayWenderlich.com, his education Youtube channel, and by giving talks & workshops at various local & global tech-related events.
After winning two first place prizes at entrepreneurship competitions, one of which was Beirut Startup Weekend 2010, Dani will mentor this year’s participants by sharing his experience and offering valuable advice & technical help.
